Welcome to Giesen WinesThere is a strength of character and determination about Giesen brothers Theo, Alex and Marcel who, despite the naysayers, made the bold leap to make wine in Marlborough in the 1980's. Over the last 30 years they have laid deep roots in the region, developing their own vineyards and simply making wines that people want to drink and that, is all there is to it. It is this staunch approach to consistency, with their passion always driving excellence that has enabled them to become one of the region’s eminent producers. Its not hard to remember the Giesen boys, among a plethora of brands named after bays, hills and stones, they are real. Giesen has walked to its own tried and true beat, remaining at the front of the pack. You can be assured a Giesen wine delivers on its promise … So be confident, be proud but most of all, enjoy! What's happening atGiesen Wines....second week of May Imagine tasting over 100 tanks of wine… this is what our winemaking team does daily, checking on the wines as they go through the ferment stage. Juice from each vineyard is kept separate, this allows Andrew, Anna and Hamish to isolate particular parcels of wine that stand out, in future vintages these parcels may be selected for our Brothers range or August wines.
The vineyards look spectacular at this time of the year with a myriad of colours as the leaves start dying, and after last week’s frost the vines are quickly losing their canopies. Post-harvest the vineyard teams are catching up with maintenance around the vineyards and will move into pruning shortly.
We have left a section of Sauvignon Blanc grapes on the vines in our Alma Street vineyard. Nature permitting will be harvested in a couple of weeks and will be used to make our second vintage of Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc. 2011 was the first time we produced this style of wine from Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc grapes and we're rapt with the wine. This decadent wine is made from fully botryised fruit, handpicked, crushed by foot, basket pressed then fermented in old French barriques. According to the winemaking team the wine has concentrated aromas of fragrant nectarine, honeysuckle, and passionfruit, with fleshy, luscious tropical fruit flavours on the 2012 season. |
